Hong Kong residents from Ningbo return to their hometown- Traveling thousands of miles away, their hometown will always be in their hearts
In a recent discussion with representatives from the Hong Kong Ninghai Association, we delved into their recent trip back to their roots in Ningbo.
Guo Zhengjie, the president of the association, shared, “This journey home allowed us, long-time residents of Hong Kong, to truly witness the remarkable changes our hometown has experienced. From the ongoing infrastructure improvements to the vibrant social and economic growth, we are genuinely inspired by what we’ve observed.”
A delegation of 20 members from the Ninghai Association visited Ninghai County in Zhejiang Province, aiming to explore new opportunities for enhancing collaboration between their hometown and Hong Kong. Their itinerary included a visit to the historic Qiantong ancient town, where they enjoyed a garden dedicated to association members, emphasizing the crucial role of expatriate Ningbo residents in preserving their traditions and fostering economic development back home.
While at the Shili Hongzhuang Cultural Park, the group learned about the unique marriage customs of East Zhejiang and delved into the rich legacy of the celebrated “Shili Hongzhuang wedding traditions.”
“Many aspects of my hometown exemplify the resilience and innovative spirit of Ningbo residents, both domestically and abroad,” commented Sun Qilie, an honorary sponsor of the association and a longstanding connector between Hong Kong and the mainland.
As the honorary president of the Hong Kong-Yong Kong Friendship Association, Sun has bridged the gap between Hong Kong and the mainland, especially between Ningbo and Hong Kong. He noted his father’s legacy as one of the first entrepreneurs from Ningbo to settle in Hong Kong. Back in 1990, Sun accompanied his father on a mission to donate a primary school and library to a secondary school in Ninghai County.
“Growing up in Hong Kong, my understanding of my hometown was fairly shallow, but my father instilled in me a deep sense of connection,” Sun reflected.
Since then, he has made numerous trips to attract investment and support educational initiatives in Ningbo. His son, Sun Rongliang, has embraced this legacy, contributing to the construction of the Ningbo University Science and Technology Building, which now bears his name.
“This visit has offered a rare chance to experience the profound cultural heritage and historical significance of my hometown firsthand,” Sun expressed. He hopes that both local and overseas Ningbo residents, particularly the younger generation, will continue to cherish and promote their cultural traditions while also fostering collaboration between Hong Kong and the mainland.
Traditionally, many Ningbo natives have ventured away, establishing successful businesses and forming a close-knit community committed to their homeland while making considerable contributions to national growth. This legacy includes prominent figures like Baoyu Gang and Shao Yifu. Today, Hong Kong serves as a hub for Ningbo expatriates, thriving in sectors such as shipping, trade, and finance, while actively participating in social initiatives and national reforms.
Founded in May 2011, the Hong Kong Ninghai Association has built a network among patriots who cherish both their hometown and Hong Kong. Guo Zhengjie concluded, “We aim to continue serving as a vital bridge between Hong Kong and the mainland, facilitating cultural and economic exchanges to jointly contribute to our country’s development.”
