Google engineer’s wife-killing case begins, lawyer says he received Chen Liren’s Chinese medical records_1
In a startling case that has sent shockwaves through the Chinese community in Silicon Valley, Liren Chen, a Google engineer, faced court on October 4th in Santa Clara County. He is accused of the fatal assault of his wife, Xuanyi Yu, earlier this year.
Reports from Hongxing News describe Chen entering the courtroom dressed in a red prison-issued T-shirt, beige pants, and black shoes, his hands and legs restrained by shackles. He appeared calm as he took his seat next to his attorney, engaging in occasional discussions.
During the hearing, Chen’s lawyer disclosed that he had obtained medical records from China pertaining to “behavioral health.” He requested a postponement of the proceedings to allow for translation and review of these documents. Despite the prosecution’s objections to further delays, the judge ultimately granted the request, setting the next hearing for early January of next year.
After the court session, Chen’s attorney indicated that he maintains regular communication with Chen. Notably, he mentioned having spoken with Chen’s father for an hour just the day before.
