A total of 13 numbered floods occurred in major rivers in Guangdong during the 2024 flood season

On October 15, 2024, the flood season in Guangdong Province officially came to an end. During this flood season, the province experienced 13 officially recorded floods in its major rivers, the highest number since records began in 1998.

The flood season in Guangdong started on April 4, 2024. Following a consultation and in accordance with the provisions of the “Regulations on Flood Control, Drought Relief, and Wind Prevention in Guangdong Province,” the Guangdong Provincial Flood Control Headquarters issued a notification on October 15, confirming the end of the flood period.

The notification stressed that even though the flood season has concluded, local authorities and departments must continue to pay close attention to weather conditions and rigorously implement measures to prevent drought and freeze damage. Officials are encouraged to seize the favorable winter and spring conditions to expedite the rectification of hazards, repair water-damaged infrastructure, and enhance disaster prevention and mitigation facilities. Communication channels should remain open, and readiness must be maintained. In the event of unusual weather conditions, respective departments are required to initiate emergency responses and implement preventative measures promptly to ensure the safety of citizens’ lives and property.

According to the Guangdong Provincial Department of Water Resources, the 2024 flood season was marked by frequent heavy rainfall, floods, and typhoons. The province endured 22 rounds of intense rainfall and was impacted by four typhoons, leading to the 13 recorded floods.

Additionally, during this flood season, the province activated various levels of emergency responses: one Level I response, two Level II responses, six Level III responses, and eleven Level IV responses. The total response duration reached 77 days, which is an increase of 1.3 times compared to the previous year.
