On October 24th, a representative from the Publicity Department of the Dulan County Committee in Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province, announced the official launch of a comprehensive desertification prevention and the “Three-North” project for 2024.
Dulan, often referred to as the “Granary of the Qaidam Basin,” is located in Haixi Prefecture, a crucial ecological area in western China known for its sand fixation and windbreak capabilities.
According to reports, the sixth phase of the “Three-North” project in Dulan County, set to run from 2024 to 2026, will cover a total area of 698,000 acres, with an investment of approximately 909 million yuan. In 2024 alone, the county has received a budget for 135,400 acres aimed at combating desertification and ecological restoration in the Qaidam Basin, which includes restoring 60,000 acres of degraded grassland, fencing off 90 kilometers of grassland, maintaining 12,058 acres of newly planted forests on sandy land, and compensating for 151,500 acres of desertification land that will be protected.
Dulan County’s Forestry and Grassland Bureau is prioritizing the implementation of key projects within the sixth phase of the “Three-North” program, fully dedicated to enhancing efforts in desertification prevention and other critical ecological initiatives. They are focusing on innovative techniques such as deep planting of willow species for dryland afforestation and the domestication of sand plants in high-altitude desert areas to promote high-quality progress in the project.
