Heavy rain causes flooding in Roswell, New Mexico, killing at least 2_1
On October 20, 2024, the southeastern city of Roswell, New Mexico, experienced severe rainfall overnight that resulted in flooding, with authorities confirming at least two fatalities. The city government took to social media to warn residents about the exceptional conditions, stating that the area was struck by intense rainstorms and warranting a rare “flash flood emergency.” Hundreds of residents found themselves trapped, and several vehicles were swept away by the rising waters.
By the morning of October 20, the New Mexico National Guard reported that at least 290 individuals had been rescued, with nearly 40 of those requiring hospitalization. Rescue operations were still ongoing as the situation continued to develop.
The flash flooding caused extensive damage to numerous homes and businesses throughout the city. Social media videos showed individuals stranded on the roofs of submerged vehicles, awaiting assistance. As a precaution, all roads leading into the Roswell area were closed due to rapidly flowing floodwaters.
According to the National Weather Service, this intense rainfall was a once-in-a-century event, with a record-setting accumulation of 147 millimeters. Meteorological experts cautioned that thunderstorm activity would persist, raising the risk of additional flooding disasters in the region.
