In an exclusive interview, we had the opportunity to sit down with Katie Chan, an enthusiastic candidate vying for a seat on the City Council in District 4 of Alhambra. Growing up in this city as the daughter of immigrants from Hong Kong and Vietnam, Chan reflects on the hard work her parents put in to forge a happy life for their family here. This dedicated upbringing has fueled her desire to run for office and strive for an even better community.

Having been educated in Alhambra, Chan has developed a strong bond with the community and its rich cultural diversity. “From a young age, I’ve experienced firsthand the importance of hard work and the support of the community,” she remarks. Her journey has been enriched by her extensive volunteer work, particularly in literacy education, healthy living, and enhancing the quality of life for others. Through her hands-on experiences in public policy, Chan has seen how effective leadership can trigger positive change.

“I want to bring my experiences back home,” she emphasizes, demonstrating her commitment to making Alhambra a more inclusive, sustainable, and livable city. Her campaign platform is focused on enhancing public transportation, increasing the availability of affordable housing, and promoting environmental justice.

Housing and tenant rights are pivotal issues for Chan. As a strong advocate for tenant protections, she is determined to champion rent stabilization measures and strengthen regulations for landlords. “My plan is to fortify Alhambra’s city charter to shield tenants from eviction and homelessness,” she states. Her strategy includes enforcing regulations to ensure all residents have safe and habitable living conditions.

Environmental sustainability is also a cornerstone of Chan’s campaign. She intends to enhance vegetation ordinances in Alhambra while promoting eco-friendly living practices. Chan envisions launching educational initiatives that inspire residents to adopt energy-efficient habits. Additionally, she plans to pursue extra funding to support the rollout of green projects that will beautify Alhambra.

Transportation is another key focus for Chan. She advocates for improvements to public transit routes and schedules and encourages green commuting options like biking and walking.

As she launches her campaign, Chan expresses deep gratitude towards the community that shaped her life. “I hope to implement policies that uplift our community and collaborate closely with residents to build a thriving Alhambra,” she concludes.
