Amdo, Tibet- Herdsmen grazing in the snow, the scenery is picturesque

On October 23, in the Doma Township of Anduo County, Nagqu City, Tibet, local herders ventured out to graze their livestock amidst a picturesque snowfall. Could you share what this snowy landscape feels like for you and your community?

“As the snow blankets the northern Tibetan grasslands, it transforms our surroundings into a breathtaking scene,” one herder explained. “This is the time when we resume our life of herding in the snow.”

What does a typical day look like for you during this snowy season?

“With our cattle and sheep leisurely searching for food in the snow, we navigate the landscape on our motorbikes, creating a stunning visual of pastoral life,” he added, pointing to a tent setup on the grassland where they rest.

We understand that herding in such conditions must have its challenges. Can you tell us how you manage?

“It’s a delicate balance,” he said. “While the snow provides beautiful scenery, we have to ensure our animals are fed and warm. It’s a demanding but rewarding way of life.”

Witnessing the herds moving through the snow, what impression do you hope to leave with those who see this picture of your life?

“I want them to see the harmony we have with nature and the dedication involved in our way of life. Each snow-covered moment is a reminder of our deep connection to this land.”

As you gather your sheep, what do you think about the future of herding in Tibet?

“There are always uncertainties, but we keep adapting. As long as we respect the land and our traditions, I believe this lifestyle will continue to thrive.”
