Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations- “China’s rice bowl” is guaranteed!
In the face of numerous challenges such as the international environment and climate change, how has China, as a major agricultural power and founding member of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, played a positive role? To find out more, we conducted an exclusive interview with Vinod, acting representative of the FAO’s office in China.
Vinod emphasized that food ranks as the third most essential human need, after air and water. He pointed out that the food produced by farmers around the world is sufficient to feed the global population, yet the issue of hunger persists. He stressed the importance of countries working together to pay more attention to hunger and to help ensure global food security.
According to Vinod, “China’s grain production has remained stable at over 650 million tons for nine consecutive years. This not only guarantees food security within China but also contributes positively to stabilizing the global food market and ensuring food security worldwide. Moreover, it plays a vital role in achieving sustainable development goals.”
FAO data reveals that over 2.8 billion people globally cannot afford a healthy diet, which is the major cause of various forms of malnutrition. To combat this, it is crucial to expand channels and strengthen the supply of agricultural, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery products, keeping markets open and accessible to ensure that diverse, nutritious, and affordable food reaches the tables of families everywhere.
“In recent years, China has implemented detailed policies to reinforce the ‘big food concept,’ creating a diversified food supply system from a holistic perspective,” Vinod stated. “This approach will better meet the growing and diverse food consumption demands of the people, contribute to food security, and enhance agricultural strength.”
