Gender Bill- Alumni Urge FG to Institutionalise Policies to End Stereotypes Against Women
Oluchi Chibuzor: During a recent event, women alumni emphasized the need for the federal government to prioritize inclusivity by putting gender policies in place that can help dismantle stereotypes against women in various sectors. This call comes as the government has yet to sign the gender bill into law, which many women advocates believe is a significant obstacle to eliminating negative stereotypes facing women.
The alumni argued that the numerous contributions of women should not be underestimated, asserting that an inclusive society offers more potential than one that is restrictive. At the second edition of the “On the Road from Abuloma Conference” (OTRFA) 2024, organized by the Old Girls Association of Federal Government Girls College (FGGC OGA), Abuloma, in Lagos, these important discussions took place.
In her keynote address, Chioma Afe, the Director of External Affairs and Social Performance at Seplat Energy, highlighted that addressing this issue can be challenging if women do not actively participate in combating negative biases against them. She urged more women to speak out against these biases and strive to excel in their respective fields.
Chinwe Ikpoki, Chairperson of the FGGCA OGA, Lagos Chapter, pointed out that stereotypes not only affect women but also impact the community and sisterhood at large. Meanwhile, Itoro Isong, the National President of FGGCA OGA, stressed the importance of individuals consciously avoiding the perpetuation of negative stereotypes against women.
Domo Kurukurubo, an entrepreneur in travel management, underscored the necessity of ongoing dialogue, asserting that women must recognize their need for sustained effort to achieve their goals.
