Last week, Japan’s Emeritus Empress Michiko suffered a fall that resulted in a fracture of her right femur. The 89-year-old Empress was hospitalized on October 8 for surgery and was discharged five days later on the afternoon of October 13. According to reports from NHK, she will continue her rehabilitation at home. Empress Michiko’s 90th birthday is coming up on October 20.

On October 6, the Empress fell at her residence, the Sento Imperial Palace, located in the Akasaka district of Tokyo. She was admitted to the University of Tokyo Hospital on October 7 following the fall and underwent surgery on October 8. The Imperial Household Agency has confirmed that her recovery is progressing well, and she is now focused on regaining her ability to walk independently.

During a recent press conference, the Chief of the Imperial Household Agency, Yoshihide Nishimura, shared that the Empress is currently using a wheelchair for rehabilitation and is working to maintain movement in her left leg to prevent muscle weakening.

Born in 1934, Empress Michiko will celebrate her 90th birthday on October 20. Her last hospitalization was in September 2019 for surgery related to an early-stage breast cancer diagnosis.
