Shanxi’s first batch of abacus intangible cultural heritage inheritance base awarded license
On October 14, the inaugural ceremony for the first batch of “Abacus Intangible Cultural Heritage Transmission Bases” took place in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province.
During the event, Zhou Qiaohong, President of the Shanxi Abacus Mental Calculation Association, emphasized the significance of abacus as a precious gem of Chinese traditional culture, rich in historical and cultural implications. She stated, “The establishment of these transmission bases aims to promote and sustain this unique cultural heritage, allowing it to breathe new life and vibrancy in contemporary society. We hope each base will lead by example and play a vital role in the reconstruction of the abacus industry association in this new era, together ensuring the protection and transmission of abacus as an intangible cultural heritage.”
Eight institutions have been officially recognized as “Abacus Intangible Cultural Heritage Transmission Bases,” including Shanxi Finance and Taxation College, Shanxi International Business Vocational College, Jinzhong Normal College, the First Primary School of Pinglu County, Chengnan Primary School in Zhongyang County, Yizhi Cultural and Art Co., Ltd. in Linfen City, Haohao Learning Consulting Center in Jincheng City, and Qihang Abacus Cultural and Art Exchange Center in Pingshan District, Datong City.
Li Yueqin, head of Yizhi Cultural and Art Co., Ltd., expressed her views as an inheritor of abacus cultural heritage. She acknowledged the importance and urgency of preserving abacus culture, stating that the commitment letter will serve as a guide for action, urging everyone to stay true to their mission. “Heritage transmission is a long-term and arduous task,” she remarked. “Each of us is a guardian of this intangible heritage and should actively participate in this endeavor to make the charm of abacus heritage shine even brighter in the new era.”
During the event, Zhou Qiaohong, along with Vice Presidents Liu Guichuan and Duan Quanhua, and expert Xin Maoxun, awarded certificates to the eight transmission bases.
Furthermore, the leaders of the eight bases signed a commitment letter, pledging to work together to advance the transmission of abacus and mental calculation culture.
