Southern Borno, Flood and Insurgency

Usman Ibrahim and Daniel Mshelia shared their harrowing experience of being abducted by insurgents along the Damboa–Biu road in Borno State about a month ago. Both men described the traumatic ordeal they went through, which mirrors the experiences of numerous others in the region who have faced similar fates at the hands of these insurgents. Tragically, some victims are no longer alive to tell their stories.

The Damboa to Biu road has gained a notorious reputation as one of the most dangerous routes in the area, predominantly controlled by bandits and terrorists. This persistent threat continues to loom despite the dedicated efforts of Prof. Babagana Zulum, the governor of Borno State, over the years.

In addition to Maiduguri, other local governments in Southern Borno, including Biu, Kwaya Kusar, Hawul, Shani, Damboa, and Gwoza, have been severely affected by flooding and insecurity, resulting in devastating consequences for the communities.

Many of the 27 local governments in the state continue to suffer due to the ongoing activities of Boko Haram. In light of this distressing situation, the Southern Borno Elders Forum, led by the dynamic Sen. Ali Mohammed Ndume, is actively working towards improving conditions for the residents who live in fear and uncertainty.

The forum is in the process of organizing a summit aimed at discussing the current challenges and exploring solutions, addressing not just the flooding issues but also broader security concerns.

I commend Sen. Ndume and his dedicated team for their unwavering commitment to uniting the people of Southern Borno and seeking the justice they rightfully deserve. It is crucial to foster cooperation and mutual understanding among the community if they are to achieve their objectives. The Elders Forum, with the guidance and support of influential politicians like Ali Ndume and his colleagues, is well-positioned to lead this commendable effort.
