Symphonic poetry drama -Jia Shu·2963- premiered at Xiamen University Malaysia Campus
On the evening of September 27, “Jia Shu · 2963,” a symphonic poem drama honoring the life of Mr. Chen Jiageng, made its debut at Xiamen University Malaysia. This performance, a commemorative piece created by the Entrepreneurs’ Association of the Xiamen University Alumni Association, celebrates the 150th anniversary of Mr. Chen’s birth. The title “2963” refers to the planet named after him, designated as No. 2963.
The premiere took place at the “Little Giant Egg” theater, drawing a substantial audience of Xiamen University students. From the beginning, Mr. Chen’s handwritten characters “Jia Shu” were prominently displayed in the background, setting an evocative tone for the evening. The narrative unfolds through a series of Mr. Chen’s personal letters, illustrating his remarkable life journey through a rich tapestry of artistic expressions, including symphonic music, traditional 24 Solar Terms drumming, and narrative recitations. These elements collectively illuminate his youthful ambitions, entrepreneurial endeavors in Southeast Asia, contributions to education, and support for the war effort.
Huang Xiaofang, the project’s chief planner, shared insights into the play’s structure, which cleverly integrates Chinese traditional concepts, particularly the 24 Solar Terms, serving as a metaphor for Mr. Chen’s diverse experiences. It also features the uniquely Malaysian 24 Solar Terms drumming. “Jia Shu · 2963” fosters a shared cultural memory and emotional connection between the peoples of China and Malaysia while delving deep into the essence of the “Jia Geng spirit.”
Zeng Tong, president of the Entrepreneurs’ Association of the Xiamen University Alumni Association, explained that the idea for the drama originated during the centennial celebration of Xiamen University in 2021 and has been carefully developed since. The decision to premiere the play at Xiamen University Malaysia—where Mr. Chen embarked on his entrepreneurial journey—during the 150th anniversary of his birth is intended to inspire younger generations to understand and carry forward the Jia Geng spirit. He also noted that following the premiere, the production will embark on a nationwide tour across various cities in China.
Chen Ming, the great-grandson of Chen Jiageng, emphasized that the establishment of a branch in Malaysia, over 90 years after Xiamen University was founded by his ancestor, truly embodies the Jia Geng spirit. He believes that through commemorative events like the premiere of “Jia Shu · 2963,” the spirit of Mr. Chen can be effectively promoted, fostering unity between the peoples of China and Malaysia and strengthening the emotional ties between the two nations.
