Taiwanese image consultant, playing with beauty fashion show style
Lilly Cook, a professional stylist and image consultant from Taiwan, has made her mark in the Bay Area by helping many Asian American women discover and showcase their unique styles. With a background in art and certification from the Association of Image Consultants International (AICI), she holds the title of Certified Image Professional (CIP) and has over 30 years of industry experience.
From a young age, Lilly was drawn to fashion, recognizing her talent early on. “I designed my first dress when I was just 13 years old. I vividly remember creating a skirt at 16, and shortly after, a designer brand released something similar. I still believe mine was better,” Lilly confidently shares.
Her passion led her to study art in the United States, where she majored in figurative sculpture and minored in fashion design. This educational background has given her a deep understanding of the human body and aesthetics, allowing her to develop an eye that appreciates beauty while perceiving individual personalities.
“I can see the framework of anyone in front of me,” Lilly explains. “As an image consultant, it’s crucial to understand people when helping them choose their clothing.”
She likens her work to that of a fashion interpreter, deciphering the stories behind a designer’s creations and matching them to the right individuals. “It’s not just about wearing designer labels or having a slim figure; what truly matters is that the story of the clothing resonates with the person,” she emphasizes.
Lilly highlights the importance of image in both professional and social settings, noting that dressing well can lead to greater acceptance and attention. “If you’re attractive, people are more likely to listen to what you have to say. It’s not about being superficial; it’s human nature,” she notes.
However, she stresses that image is not solely about looks. Communication skills and etiquette are equally important, which is why she incorporates history, culture, and art into her coursework, including a dedicated lesson on social etiquette.
Many of Lilly’s students are successful professionals, including lawyers, doctors, and executives in the tech industry. Her expertise has earned her the trust of her students, with some even bringing their daughters to class after seeing the positive impact on their own lives. Despite her straightforward personality, she acknowledges that some students can be challenging. “I teach as I normally would, not trying to placate them, and I don’t take it personally,” she admits.
What sets Lilly apart from many in her field is her enthusiasm for giving free talks to various groups, even though she prefers to avoid social gatherings like parties. “Even if it’s free, I give my all because I want to spread the concept of image consulting to as many people as possible,” she explains.
Lilly doesn’t see her work as merely a business; she perceives it as a sacred responsibility. “I’ve empowered many women, enhancing their beauty and transforming their lives,” she reflects. “Seeing my students evolve brings me immense joy and a sense of accomplishment.”
