On October 23rd, a tragic event unfolded at the headquarters of Turkish Aerospace Industries located in the outskirts of Ankara. Reports indicate that explosions and gunfire marked what the Turkish Interior Ministry has preliminarily identified as a terror attack, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuries to 22 others.
The incident occurred around 3 PM local time. According to local television reports, the assailant, armed with an assault rifle, arrived at the building’s entrance in a taxi during a security shift change. After detonating a bomb, the attacker rushed into the building, opening fire on the security personnel, leading to a chaotic scene filled with blasts and gunfire.
Ali Yerlikaya, Turkey’s Interior Minister, lamented the loss of five lives, confirming that among the injured, three have been treated and discharged, while 19 are still receiving medical care. He also noted that the two attackers, a man and a woman, have been killed, but their identities have yet to be fully confirmed, and it remains unclear if any accomplices are still at large.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemned the heinous attack, expressing his condolences for the victims. Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz revealed that four of the deceased were employees of Turkish Aerospace Industries, while one was the taxi driver who transported the gunmen to the site.
As of now, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, the Turkish Defense Minister, Yaşar Güler, has directed suspicion towards the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), without providing supporting evidence. He emphasized that despite previous consequences, the group continues its actions, and the military will persist in its efforts to eliminate every last terrorist.
