The colorful artistic life of 90-year-old lacquer painting master Zheng Chongyao
On October 16, the “Beautiful Lacquer in the Strait—Master Zheng Chongyao and Students’ Inheritance Exhibition” opened at the Fujian Strait Folk Art Museum. Master Zheng Chongyao, along with over 30 of his students, showcased more than 70 works that span various themes, including portraits, landscapes, flowers, birds, and some experimental abstract pieces. The exhibition vividly demonstrates the beauty of lacquer art in design, materials, and craftsmanship.
In an interview on September 26, we had the opportunity to visit Master Zheng’s studio located in the historical Sanfang Qixiang area of Fuzhou. Despite being in his nineties, Master Zheng comes to the studio almost every day, where he not only creates his own works but also teaches his students diligently.
Master Zheng was observed meticulously applying lacquer to a base on that day, showcasing his continued dedication to the craft. He was also seen involved in coloring his pieces, emphasizing the intricate techniques that characterize his distinctive style.
During our visit, he demonstrated the unique approach he takes in his works, such as using eggshells, gold, silver, and lacquer powder for their mysterious effects. Master Zheng’s commitment to teaching was evident as he guided his students, offering encouragement and feedback on their upcoming exhibition pieces.
Just a day before the exhibition opened, on October 15, Master Zheng was present at the venue, enthusiastically working alongside his students to prepare for the display. His energy and passion for lacquer painting were palpable as he engaged in lively discussions about their creations.
When the exhibition opened, Master Zheng proudly introduced his students’ works to the guests, reflecting on his lifelong commitment to nurturing the next generation of lacquer artists.
