Two newly built ferries on Chaozhou section of Hanjiang River go on trial

On October 14, the Chaozhou Maritime Safety Administration, alongside the China Classification Society Chaozhou Inspection Office, conducted oversight and guidance on the trial sailing of two newly constructed ferries at the Dongfeng and Dabiand ferry terminals on the Han River. This initiative is aimed at ensuring the safety of waterborne transportation for local residents.

The newly deployed ferries are named “Yue Chaozhou Ferry 0079” and “Yue Chaozhou Ferry 0080,” each measuring 14 meters in length, equipped with main engines generating a total power of 15.7 kW and a gross tonnage of 23. These ferries are certified to carry up to 29 passengers. During the trial, the vessels underwent mooring and navigation tests, where essential equipment was assessed, including anchoring systems, rudder controls, lifeboats, fire safety features, and propulsion systems. All testing requirements were successfully met.

According to the Chaozhou Maritime Safety Administration, ferries play a crucial role in the transportation of people across the Han River. Over recent years, the administration has intensified safety oversight for ferry services, collaborating closely with inspection departments to ensure the safety of water traffic on the river. So far this year, they have conducted safety inspections on 26 vessels and on-site checks for 73 ferries operating in the Han River area, addressing all identified issues to ensure a comprehensive corrective response.

Statistical estimates reveal that the old ferry “Yue Chaozhou Ferry 0063,” which was built on April 4, 2007, serves over 30,000 passengers annually. Meanwhile, the old “Yue Chaozhou Ferry 0050,” in operation since February 20, 2004, accommodates about 10,000 passengers each year. The two new ferries are expected to be operational by November, promising an enhanced travel experience for the community.

Furthermore, plans are in place to replace four ferries in the Han River Chaozhou section this year. In addition to the two currently undergoing trials, new ferries for the Xiedu and Dajian ferry terminals are nearing completion. The Chaozhou Maritime Safety Administration is committed to advancing the renewal of aging ferries and working with inspection agencies to guarantee the safety of waterborne transportation for the public.
