Typhoon -Tami- will enter the South China Sea today, and weak cold air will affect our country from the 25th

On October 24, 2023, the Central Meteorological Administration reported that Typhoon “Tanmey” made landfall around 1 AM local time on the northeastern coast of Luzon Island in the Philippines. At the time of landfall, the maximum wind speed near its center reached level 10 (25 meters per second), categorizing it as a strong tropical storm. Meteorologists predict that “Tanmey” will continue moving westward at a speed of 10-15 kilometers per hour and is expected to enter the South China Sea by tonight, gradually intensifying to a strong tropical storm or even typhoon level (28-35 meters per second, levels 10-12). After October 27, its forward motion is expected to slow and begin to spiral, leading to a gradual decrease in strength. The Central Meteorological Administration has issued a blue alert for the typhoon this morning.

Additionally, a yellow warning for strong winds has been issued. From 8 AM on October 24 to 8 AM on October 25, winds of level 7-9, with gusts reaching level 10, are expected in the southern East China Sea, Taiwan Strait, areas east of Taiwan, and northeastern and central eastern regions of the South China Sea. Particularly in the Taiwan Strait, winds could reach level 10, with gusts up to level 11.

As Typhoon “Tanmey” affects the region, heavy to torrential rain is forecasted from October 24 to 27 in southern Jiangsu, Shanghai, southeastern Anhui, northern and eastern Zhejiang, northeastern Fujian, Taiwan Island, southwestern Guangdong, southeastern Guangxi, Hainan Island, and Sansha. Some areas in southeastern Zhejiang, eastern Taiwan, Hainan Island, and Sansha may experience severe downpours, with localized areas potentially facing extraordinary rainfall.

Moreover, from October 25 to 28, a weak cold front is expected to bring temperature drops of 3-6°C across much of the country, with some areas seeing drops of up to 8°C. The majority of central and eastern regions will experience overcast conditions and rain, while regions in the eastern Tibetan Plateau may witness light to moderate snow or sleet, with potential heavy snowfall in localized areas. Meteorologists are advising residents in coastal East China, as well as Taiwan and Hainan, to prepare for heavy rainfall, and to be cautious of significant temperature fluctuations in central and eastern regions, particularly during early morning and evening times when temperatures are expected to vary widely.
