UC Berkeley charity lecture Jiumei talks about meditation to relieve stress
On October 20, UC Berkeley hosted a popular public seminar focused on “Relieving Anxiety, Finding Joy in the Present” led by renowned mindfulness instructor Kumiko. The event attracted a diverse audience, including students from various disciplines, Bay Area scholars, and university faculty, all eager to learn effective strategies for managing academic and life pressures while achieving a sense of inner balance.
During her presentation, Kumiko shared practical techniques for stress relief through mindfulness meditation and concentration training. She emphasized the multitude of challenges modern students face in academics, careers, and personal lives, highlighting the importance of maintaining inner peace and wisdom. These tools not only assist students in achieving better academic outcomes but also empower them to make informed choices in their relationships and professional development.
Kumiko conveyed that true success in life extends beyond material achievements; it also involves finding tranquility and happiness amidst the complexities of daily life. She encouraged students to remain attentive to their inner selves as they pursue their careers and aspirations, suggesting that personal growth is essential for a more holistic sense of fulfillment.
Hui-Chun Zhou, a biology professor at Stanford University, reflected on her own experiences, stating that the seminar provided her with newfound insights into stress management. In particular, she noted how the meditation techniques discussed could foster inner peace and focus, especially when faced with the demands of a busy work schedule and teaching responsibilities.
Kumiko, once recognized as one of China’s top ten businesswomen and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, made a significant career shift. At the pinnacle of her success, she chose to step away from the corporate world for four years to dedicate herself to meditation and the pursuit of inner calm and wisdom.
