On October 14, in the Great Hall of the People, Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), met with Australian Senate President Ryanes for discussions.

Zhao Leji remarked that over the past two years, under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Albanese, China-Australia relations have emerged from a low point, achieving a comprehensive turnaround and returning to a path of healthy and stable development. He emphasized that China is eager to work alongside Australia to enhance political mutual trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote the construction of a more mature, stable, and fruitful comprehensive strategic partnership.

He pointed out that currently, dialogue across various fields between the two nations is resuming and advancing in an orderly manner, and practical cooperation and cultural exchanges are becoming increasingly vibrant. This development is the result of mutual efforts and understanding, which is hard-earned and should be valued. Establishing a correct understanding of each other is a fundamental prerequisite for fostering strong China-Australia relations. He expressed hope that Australia would maintain an objective and positive perception of China’s development, respect China’s core interests and major concerns, and solidify the political foundation of the bilateral relationship. He encouraged both countries to strengthen cooperation in traditional sectors such as energy and agriculture while expanding collaboration in emerging fields like green technology, new energy, and artificial intelligence, to promote a fair and open trade and investment environment. He also underscored the importance of deepening cooperation in areas such as local governance, culture, education, and tourism, and actively promoting exchanges between the youth of both nations to cultivate a solid public foundation for China-Australia ties.

Zhao Leji noted the close interactions that have characterized the legislative bodies of both countries over the years. He expressed that the NPC is keen to work with the Australian Parliament to focus on implementing the important consensus reached by their leaders, strengthening friendly exchanges among high-level legislative officials, specialized committees, bilateral friendship groups, NPC representatives, and senators, and sharing experiences in governance and legislative oversight.

He also commented on China’s commitment to green development, expressing a willingness to share development opportunities with Australia and other countries worldwide to promote global green transformation and facilitate the construction of an open world economy.

In his remarks, Ryanes highlighted the significance of the Australia-China relationship, stating that a stable and constructive bilateral relationship aligns with the interests of both nations and the region. He noted that members of the Australian Senate delegation visiting China represent various parties and regions but share a common desire to see the healthy development of Australia-China relations. He encouraged further practical cooperation in trade, green economy, climate change, and cultural fields. He emphasized the value of open dialogue to better manage differences, which would be conducive to achieving mutual benefits. The Australian Senate is eager to enhance communication and collaboration with the NPC to contribute to the development of Australia-China relations and to deepen the understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Tie Ning also participated in the talks.
